FORTRESS AND WATER DEFENCE LINE

The fortified town of Weesp has two beautiful fortresses. From the Torenfort on the Ossenmarkt you can take a cycling or walking tour to Fort Uitermeer. Along the winding 's Gravelandseweg are wooden houses that date from the time of the Dutch Waterline. The Old Dutch Waterline originated in the Disaster Year 1672, when France, England and the German principalities of Munster and Cologne declared war on the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The Old Dutch Waterline was a military defense line in the 17th and 18th centuries and is located between the IJsselmeer and the Biesbosch, west of Utrecht.

There are countless cycling routes that take you through the picturesque streets in the historic center and along sights such as windmill De Vriendschap and the Sint-Laurentiuskerk. MUIDERSLOT

Muiderslot is one of the oldest castles in The Netherlands. Built for defense purposes, it has been overlooking the waters of the IJmeer for over 700 years. After falling into decay, it became a national museum since 1878 after being renovated by the well-known architect Pierre Cuypers. Enjoy the castle gardens and visit the castle itself.
